" The Boxer " " Verse Four, " c.1968
Here on a page of American Airlines stationaly,the first and the full second verse of " The Boxer " appear nearly in their final form. On the back side of the stationaly, the word "boxer" makes its first appearance in an early draft of the final verse.
There are also two lines from the song's " extra verse " which is shown here in its entirety on a sheet of lined notebook paper and titled " verse 4 "
Lamenting the passing of the years and acknowledging that despite changes we ultimately reman who we are,this verse in not present in the studio recording of the song,but it has frequently been sung in concert, both by Simon & Garfunkel and by Simon as a solo artist.
